The medicalization of childbirth as an\ud outcome of social medicalization has been described\ud as a complex sociocultural process that\ud transforms the experiences, suffering and pain –\ud which were formerly managed in the family or\ud community settings – into medical needs. The\ud scope of this paper is to reflect upon the excessive\ud number of cesarean sections in Brazil from a critical\ud and objective standpoint. Data on caesarean\ud section statistics and studies on women’s preference\ud on the manner of delivery are discussed in\ud order to contribute to the discussion on the empowerment\ud of the health system consumers.
