Background: Several plasma membrane transporters have been shown to mediate the cellular influx and/or efflux of iodothyronines, including the sodium-independent organic anion co-transporting polypeptide 1 (OATP1), the sodium taurocholate co-transporting polypeptide (NTCP), the L-type amino acid transporter 1 (LAT1) and 2 (LAT2), and the monocarboxylate transporter 8 (MCT8).
