2 1,4892 1*4893 / Dean McLain read the minute on smoking regulations from the Student Personnel Services Council, Discussion followed on various aspects of the problem* Should smoking be allowed in certain arease of the camous where there is no danger $f fire and it is not a moral issue? The matter of consideration for the entire group and tidiness of premises; oriental versus western coinions of oarents regarding students smoking in the presence of instructors; the attack by the Press on AUC girl smokers; smoking as a religious issue; should, graduate students be allewed to smoke? should smoking be allowed in graduate seminars? should regulations apply to teachers as well as students? No decision was reached. The matter was referred to a later meeting. The Building Committee reached a decision regarding plans for the new buildings: There will be two separate buildings- a Science building and a Student Services Center, The Science building will be erected on the site of the present tennis courts and the Student Services Center an the site of the old Science Building and Undergraduate Library, The architect will arrange functional conferences with department heads and others involved in the new buildings and will submit new cost estimates for the inside facilities. The ^resident mentioned the hope for further funds to remodel the front lower levels of the main building and make this area into basic administrative offices. The space now involved in administrative offices would be made available for classrcem use. The possibility of building a fourth floor on the Sheikh Rihan side of the building (back far enough so that it would, not upset the present facade) for music and other such acitivities was also mentioned. The Senate was in agreement with the principles recommended by the Building Committee and the proposals will be submitted to the Board, of Directors, 1.4894 Tr, Ntwaihi reported that the present education laws require all teachers to take certain education and. psychology courses before they can be considered as qualified teachers. AUC graduates from the Faculty of Arts & Sciences do not have the equivalent of these courses unless they have taken Education as their professional sequence. The Government of the UAR has set up the needed courses in Arabic, which does not meet the needs of AUC graduates. It is proposed that the American University allow these graduates to take AUC courses in education and psychology in order to qualify under the present education laws. This proposal was approved in principle, subject to receipt ff more information on the number of AUC graduates involved and' their particular needs as regards courses and classes. Such a pregram may well prove to be our first step towards a * M,A, degree in Education
