4 f - The work load described does not permit a great deal of time for independent basic research which too is an essential for a good teacher. For this reason the summer months and the leave of absence arc the important times for intensive study and research. The three month period in the summer (June 15 to Sept, 15) is to be considered primarily as the time for scholarly growth and recreation. Both are essential. Full time teachers are responsible for planning and carrying out some definite program of advanced study or research each summer. Such growth is one of the essential criteria for promotion. Teachers who are deprived of this opportunity by being asked to teach in the summer session should be given a stipend for such teaching, Z - For administrative, research and library staff. In general these positions focus around an office and a desk. Where this is true, a regular schedule of office hours should bo maintained, and a regular routine of work established. At the seme time, such staff members likewise share in the committee work, public relations activities and other services which all professional staff members should share• a - This staff member can be expected to be at his station in the university or on official business for the university at least 40 hours per week. b - The nature of the work ih ich he performs is not dependent upon the academic year in the same way that the work of the teacher docs. It requires that he be on duty throughout the calendar year, except for a specified vacation period (normally two months)^* *For most of those in educational administration or research, some teaching is involved. However, the basic category of the position must determine the manner in which the work year is arranged, 3 - For non-professional staff (Secretarial, clerical, servants, etc.) A regular schedule of hours per week - approximately 40 - should be maintained and a regular routine of work established.
