A detailed report on future planning for the DOC will be presented at the May Board meet­ing. It was asked if it would be possible for the Desert Center to give advice to other agricultural centers in Egypt; in this way, it was felt, the benefits of the Center's activities would beef­fectively demonstrated. The creation of a separate branch of the DOC whose function would be to sell commodities and produce on the local market was also discussed. The members felt that such an initiative would have to be carefully planned and presumed the existence of adequately trained staff. It was also pointed out that care should be taken to ensure that such activities did not have the potential to offend related Egyptian Ministries. 12. Report of the Development Committee Mr. Hedlund asked Mrs. Miller to report. Mrs. Miller introduced the new Chief Development Officer, Mr. David Merchant, who will be joining AUC this summer and who comes to AUC with extensive fund raising experience, most lately with the International Diabetes Center in Minneapolis. Mrs. Miller announced a gift of $500,000 from Amoco, of which $200,000 had already been received from Mr. Dalton. The gift will endow a departmental chair in the Jameel Management Center. Annual Givin~ - With $570,000 of the $1 million goal raised thus far, annual giving is pro­ceeding at last year's rate and the contributions from giving clubs will exceed last year's to­tals. Librazy Endowments - Mrs. Miller announced that the Weyerhaeuser family had donated $50,000 for the Egyptian Room of the Sheikh Rihan Library in honor of Mrs. Harmon on her latest birthday and that Mrs. Harmon had pledged $200,000 in endowment for the Special Collections. To date $570,000 of the $1 million goal has been raised. The Board moved to have a resolution honoring Mrs. Harmon and her children carried out. Trustee Gjyin~ - By the end of the first quarter of the 1989/90 academic year, Trustees had made donations totaling $52,694 and obtained an additional $40,800 from their foundations and companies for a total of $93,494. Twenty-five Trustees are members of the President's Club. It was urged that all Trustees should make contributions. Debt for Development - After a discussion of the "debt for development" opportunities exist­ing in Egypt, the Development Committee decided it would look into donated debt or debt purchased with AID grants, but that at this time it was not advisable to use any AUC dollars to fund such debt transactions. The two major goals facing the Development Committee were to complete the fund raising for the new dormitory and library endowment and to raise annual giving from $1 million to $2 million. 13. Report of the Alumni & Student Affairs Committee Mrs. Driscoll reported on following items discussed by the Committee.
