• • - 3 - scales. Within the faculty elimination of the local-foreign differential continues to be the predominant issue. The PPP committee is now moving toward a definition of equality as meaning equality in cash take-home pay (i.e. taking into account TIAA, Social Security, etc. deduction). On this basis there is not much difference in t he scales now . A solution to this issue may therefore be in sight . One final word on the budget. Next year's projections show an ex­penditure increase of less than 10%. This will go up slightly when the salary increases are included. But if inflation does proceed at a signifi­cant rate this year it is hard to see how we can keep increased costs at that level . CONSTRUCTION Plans for Hill House reconstruction were finalized after the last Board meeting. We hired an architect, Yousef Shafik, formerly dean of architecture at Cairo University and head of a firm which did the original' work on the building. He is now preparing detailed architectural drawings. We also are asking an informal University committee called the Community Services Committee, which concerns itself with faculty housing, morale, etc ~ to take responsibility for making recommendations on the furnishings. Furnishings will be complex and important to the building's final appearance. Possible purchase of the Isis Building, near the U.S. Embassy, authorized by the Board in February, has been delayed by legal problems over additions owners have already made to the building. They built without a permit and may have to tear a major part of the construction down. The issue is now in court on appeal, however, and it is possible they will get away with a fine. The location and facilities are excellent for AUC. It is a fine building. And the price seems reasonable from an asking point of view. Whether we will finally buy it remains problematical though, and we currently are planning on the need to extend the Zamalek lease. The Management Program has further defined its needs in a new Jameel Center building and preliminary new drawings will be prepared by our staff in June and July. An MA graduate of the Management program, who has a large Middle Eastern business, has volunteered to do the detailed engineering drawings and plans for us as a contribution to AUC. A new consultant currently is again in Cairo and going over the press. Plans are being prepared for its relocation under the library terrace, and we hope to start building in that area by late summer.
