The skepticism increases as the person's relationship to evangelistic missions increases, these having tended to discount the University's sincerity in its reli"ious expressions. 'aradoxically and parenthetic-illy, many of the Hoslei is who are opposed to the missions are skeptical of tae University for they thin: it is too much an expression of the missionary enterprise. The Egyptian 2rotestant ministers are ready with confidence and friendship to support the University. The Copts, many of their members being students and alumni, likewise look Won the University with warm friendship and favor. The Embassies tend to be skeptical but hopeful of the University for several reasons. The first arises from a mistaken identity of the University as a prosely-tizing institution. Anot'aer and far more ii portant is that in their judgment (and here I speak of the American bassy in particular), the University is sub-standard in its educational performance. Knowing something of the better educational insti-tutions in America, they have more of a basis for comparison than do some of the other . embassies. However, the Embassies, the rrlerican in particular, know many of the difficulties a free institution faces in its operation, and their criticism. is conditioned by that knowledge. There is every reason to believe that the Ameri-can Embassy ("..'oint Four" included) is reLdj to help in evary possible way, but because of its latent skepticism, the University must take the initiative in seek-ing that help and in demonstrating consistently that it is worthy of it. It can, perhaps, be assumed that the other major ,overnraental groups will take their lead from the -a erican. The Egyptian government officials vary in their attitude toward the auerican University. On the one hand, the University enjoys a good reputation arising from the basic fact that it has really been unselfish in its service to ,gypt and the middle _;ast. i any of its graduates have been, and are, high in public and governmental services; many others are recognized as influential citizens, as professional men, business men, merchants, and the like. In spite of changing ,gyptian governments this reputation continues because the University has been respectful and coopertive to all governments, but it has scrupulously ke )t its freedom and has been straight-forward in its dealings. On the other hand, many of the leaders in Egyptian education tend to be critical of the University at the point of scholarly leadership and lack of "recognition" of the University degree by the ï::gyptian government. This whole situation is a bit ambiguous. Perhaps the American University's scholarly production is not as extensive as the state institutions, but the emphasis, here, is far more on teaching than on lecturing and writing. It is also true, however, that some of our staff are not too well qualified to do what they are doing. It is likewise true, further to cloud the issue, that the University is not sure it rants "recognition" because of the loss of freedom of action that might come along with it. Some of our more knowledgeable staff insist that our graduates are actually "recognized" any.ray, because of the abilities they finally demonstrate in the work that they do. This recognition is also confirmed by the fact that the i-,gyptian government leaders in education and other ministries consistently make use of our graduates and appoint them to responsible positions. The students, however, are not satisfied with this kind of recognition, and are little inclined to worry about any loss in freedom that the University might suffer. They want recognition because it means quicker placement in jobs where government control is a factor. The lack of such recognition, along with other factors, has led to a type of student in the i,aculty of ,:rts and Sciences, many of whom at the time of this writing, do not think too highly of the University.
