1 Appendix B, page 1 October 29, 1921. 144-e REPORT OF THE FIUME COMMITTEE OF THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY AT CAIRO For The Year 1920-21 Meetings held= Since the last meeting of the Trustees in October, 1920, the Finance Committee held meetings on the following dates: November 23,1920, December 21, 1920, March 9, 1921, August 17, 1921, and October 29, 1921. (1) The Past Year. During the past year the following matters have been taken up, and acted upon by the Committee, either as lying within the scope of its duties, or as being specially ccmmitteed to its (1). Objectives aimed at: Three objectives were aimed at. The first was to meet the requirements of the current budget for 1920- 21, amounting to $63,144, against which there were pledges amounting to $21,740, leaving a net balance to be raised of $41,404. This goal was fully reached, and indeed was partly exceeded, inasmuch as not only was the regular budget covered, but also some $6,000 of obligations belonging to the previous year, which had not been included in the budget, and also some $12,000 of Interchurch obligations which it had been expected would be left over until the year 1921-22. The second objective agreed upon was the raising of funds with which to meet the con-ditional offer of $35,000 made by Dr. and Mrs. W. B. Hill. It was not possible to accomplish this in full, but $8,000 was secured to be applied to this conditional offer, thus reducing the debt upon the University plant to that extent, and also making available a like amount for the first year of the operation of the School of Oriental Studies. The third objective agreed upon was the effort to cancel in particular a note held for a short period for $25,000 chargeable to the University plant. It was not found practicable to secure funds to accomplish this, but the note was renewed by being placed with the B'-ard of Foreign Miss-ions of the United Presbyterian Church, and then with the Carnegie Trust Company. (2). Committee on Social and Religious Surveys. Earnest representaticns had been made to the University on the part of this committee, of which Dr. Mott is Chairman, that Dr. Watson be released for as much time as possible in order to assist in the important work of this Committee, the Finance Committee authorized Dr. Watson to offer to theCommittee two days a week and to accept the offer of the Committee on Social and Religious Surveys to provide additional help for the Philadelphia office in view of this claim upon Dr. Watson's time, to the extent of .200 a month for such time as he could give to this work. This arrangement has continued since January 1021, and it will terminate approximately at the end of November, 1921. (3) Appointment of Associate Secretary. After a very earnest and exten ed searc or ie purpose o securing someone who would be able to fill the extremely difficult and important position of Associate Secretary for the University, in America, Mr. Hermann A. Lum, formerly Secretary in the Student Y. . C.
