International audienceThe purpose of this study is to reassess the use of the Indre River, a tributary of the Loire River, during the early Middle Ages. At the end of the 8th century, the community of St Martin of Tours settled in this secondary valley a monastery which persisted until the 18th century. The Indre River is supposed to be a very limited circulation axis at that time given the absence of mentions of the river in the tax exemptions of the Carolingian charters and the presence of many mills which would impeded the circulation on its course.
