International audienceThis paper questions the notion of peripheralisation as a key to analyse the dynamics of small cities in the Land of Mecklenburg-West-Pomerania, a rural region in North-Eastern Germany. It will be shown how small cities can be affected by the four dimensions of peripheralisation: loss of population, economic and infrastructural weakening, dependence (in a political meaning) and stigmatisation. This approach stresses the asymmetry of flows and the dependency relationships of peripheral regions. Development perspectives of small cities are influenced by these trends: some cities try to go against them and set up new strategies to attract inhabitants and to change the image of their territory, both at the local and federa...
