Depression is one of the leading causes of disability experienced by individuals in the United States. Given the limited outward symptoms and social stigma that accompanies mental disorders, many individuals afflicted with this mood disorder either do not seek out medical attention or cannot find treatments that adequately relieve their symptoms. This thesis seeks to identify best-practice guidelines for utilizing physical activity to alleviate symptoms of depression. After synthesizing the existing research, the connection between engagement in physical activity and a reduction in depressive symptoms surfaced.
