Process analysis, optimization and coating of nano-calcium carbonate particles with fatty acids

Il seguente lavoro di tesi riguarda la produzione di nanoparticelle di carbonato di calcio tramite processo per precipitazione, progettate come carica per materiali plastici, al fine di migliorare le prestazioni meccaniche specifiche di questi ultimi. Il processo è stato sviluppato a partire dalla materia prima di ossido di calcio in polvere micrometrica ed è stato fatto idratare per ottenere idrossido di calcio. Quest’ultimo, successivamente, è stato fatto reagire in un sistema ad agitazione costante con acqua, anidride carbonica e acido citrico al fine di condurre una carbonatazione e quindi ottenere una sospensione finemente dispersa di acqua e nanoparticelle di carbonato di calcio. E’ stato condotto uno studio sull’ottimizzazione del processo descritto tramite Design of Experiment (D.O.E.), tecnica che consente di ottimizzare il numero di prove ed analizzare un insieme di variabili ed interazioni tra le stesse elevato, grazie a metodi statistici. Tale metodologia di analisi di ottimizzazione ha consentito così di ridurre il numero di prove e valutare il processo principalmente in base a tre variabili, temperatura di esercizio, numero di palette, e percentuale in peso di acido citrico. Il Prodotto ottenuto è stato analizzato mediante il Dynamic Light scattering (D.L.S.), al fine di valutare la distribuzione dimensionale delle particelle, e l’indice di polidispersità, per avere informazioni sullo stato di aggregazione. In base ai dati ottenuti ed ai tempi di reazione monitorati è stata fatta un’analisi d’interazione tra le variabili scelte, definendo così le condizioni di reazione ottimali. Al fine di studiare l’influenza della materia prima sul prodotto finito, è stato studiato il profilo di temperatura tra due tipologie di ossido di calcio durante l’idratazione. Questo ha permesso di comprendere a pieno i risultati ottenuti dal DOE. Sono state effettuate ulteriori prove al fine di confermare il trend dato dall’analisi del DOE con un ossido di calce differente, e successivamente è stata definita la prova migliore tra quelle effettuate. Le particelle sono state analizzate dal punto di vista morfologico tramite Microscopio a scansione elettronica (S.E.M.), per chiarire gli aspetti morfologici, di aggregazione ed ottenere maggiori informazioni sulla forma ed evoluzione delle nanoparticelle di Carbonato di calcio. La prova ottimale selezionata da DOE e prove successive è stata così stabilizzata con acido stearico. Questo perché l’aggregazione tra nanoparticelle di carbonato di calcio è dovuto a legami di tipo covalente tra le superfici delle varie particelle, e la presenza di aggregati potrebbe inficiare sulle proprietà finali del composito polimerico. Lo stearato che ricopre la superficie delle particelle di carbonato permette sempre la formazione di aggregati, ma con legami di tipo secondario, più deboli e quindi più facilmente spezzabili, permettendo di ottenere una distribuzione più fine ed omogenea, e quindi più adatta come utilizzo di filler. E’ stato inoltre studiato un metodo di addolcimento dell’acqua al fine di ridurre la presenza degli ioni calcio che presenti in soluzione non permettono una corretta ricopertura delle particelle. Gli effetti di questo metodo sono stati studiati sulla prova selezionata e il prodotto finito è stato analizzato tramite calorimetria a scansione differenziale (D.S.C.), e tramite analisi termogravimetrica (T.G.A.), e ciò ha consentito di valutare l’effettiva efficacia del metodo di abbattimento degli ioni calcio. The following thesis work concerns the production of calcium carbonate nanoparticles by precipitation process to be used as a filler for plastic materials, to improve the specific mechanical performance of this ones. The process was developed starting from the raw material of calcium oxide in micrometric powder and was hydrated to obtain calcium hydroxide. The lime milk obtained was subsequently reacted in a system stirred with water, carbon dioxide and citric acid in order to conduct carbonation and thus obtain a finely dispersed suspension of water and calcium carbonate nanoparticles. A study was conducted on the optimization of the process described through design of experiment (D.O.E.), a technique that allows to optimize the number of tests and analyse a high set of variables and interactions between them thanks to statistical methods. This optimization analysis methodology thus made it possible to reduce the number of tests and evaluate the process mainly on the basis of three variables, operating temperature, number of impellers, and weight percentage of citric acid. The product obtained was analysed by Dynamic Light scattering (D.L.S.), in order to evaluate the dimensional distribution of the particles, and the polydispersity index, to assess their aggregation status. On the basis of the data obtained from this one, and the monitored reaction times, an interaction analysis was carried out between the studied variables, thus defining the optimal reaction conditions. In order to study the influence of the raw material on the finished product, the temperature profile between two types of calcium oxide during hydration was studied. This allowed us to fully understand the results obtained by the DOE. Further tests were carried out in order to confirm the trend given by the analysis of the DOE with a different calcium oxide, and subsequently the best test among those carried out was defined. The particles were analysed from a morphological point of view using an electron scanning microscope (S.E.M.), to clarify the morphological and aggregation aspects and obtain more information on the shape and evolution of the calcium carbonate nanoparticles. The optimal test selected by DOE and subsequent tests was thus stabilized with coating of stearic acid. This is because the aggregation of the calcium carbonate nanoparticles is due to covalent bonds between the surfaces of the ones, and the presence of these formed aggregates could affect the final properties of the polymeric composite. The presence of the stearate on the surface of the particle allow the formation of aggregates, but with secondary type bonds, weaker and therefore easily breakable, allowing to obtain a finer and homogeneous distribution, more suitable as use of fillers. A method of water softening has also been studied in order to reduce the presence of the calcium ions present in the solution do not allow a complete coating of the particles. The effects of this method were studied on the selected test and the finished product was analysed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), this allowed to evaluate the effective effectiveness of the water softening method
