Formerly known as Mongrel Downs, Tanami Downs is a 4200 square kilometre cattle station located about 700 kilometres noth-west of Alice Springs. These men live in Balgo, an Aboriginal community just over the Western Australian border from Tanami Downs. New boots and shirts and relatively clean hats idenitfy them as casual contract cowboys. The land was handed over to its traditional owners on 21 December, 1992 and is now owned by the Mungkurrupa Land Trust and the station is operated by a board comprising a mix of traditional owners, an outside repesentativeof another pastoral station and an agricultural consultant
