Abstract

Many prints were produced to commemorate the death of famous Kabuki actors and it shows how popular Kabuki actors were in late Edo and early Meiji period.; The Kabuki actor, portrayed Ichikawa Danjuro 8th died when he was only 32, and at the peak of his popularity. The numbers of the memorial prints were noted as up to three hundred kinds.; Also available in an electronic version via the internet: http://nla.gov.au/nla.pic-vn4839150. Japanese print shows a man is (dead) on a bed and many young women wre sitting next to it crying. Some of the women are reading some documents. A few men are sitting closer to the body and they also are mourning. The structure of the image is same as the typical pictures of Buddha's death and mourning
