Map of the first missionary voyage to the South Pacific undertaken at the expense of the London Missionary Society. Under the command of Captain James Wilson, the Duff set out from London for Tahiti on August 10, 1796, and visited many island groups, depositing missionaries on Tahiti, Tonga and the Marquesas. This map shows their outward and well-dated route over the year 1797. But trouble with the natives later arose on some of these islands and some of the rescued missionaries were finally settled in Sydney, Australia. The map shows the Duff proceeded onto Tongataboo [i.e. the Tongan islands] then northwest to Fiji then the Carolina Islands sailing north of the Philippines to Canton, China. During this journey a new group of islands, the Duff Group, was discovered among the Santa Cruz islands.
