When the Oakdale colliery in NSW goes belly-up, 125 coal miners are left without jobs and owed $6.3 m in entitlements. The ensuing media hullabaloo compels the Howard Gvernment to make a one-off payment to the miners as compensation and the federal Minister for Workplace Relations, Peter Reith, to look for options to deal with the problem in the future - a task not made any easier when it is revealed that the Government has similarly compensated the workers of the failed National Textile Company, whose board is chaired by none other than John Howard's older brother, Stan.--Information provided by Geoff Pryor
