"The first Mardi Gras in 1978 was a street demonstration where about 60 gay men and lesbians were arrested. Subsequent Mardi Gras marches were political in nature. In 1981 the march was small by modern standards, it had floats and the crowd walked with it. It finished in Hyde Park and some people stayed on to listen to the bands. Peter Tully wore this outfit and his was by far the most spectacular costume. Peter was lobbying to turn the Mardi Gras from a street march into a more fun event." -- William Yang
