Dark fermentation is a natural biological process that can be used to degrade organic waste, such as lignocellulosic components, and to produce energy under the form of hydrogen (H2). The process is based on the activity of fermentative microorganisms in consortia that develop an efficient enzymatic activity to degrade complex substrate as lignocellulose. The presence of hydrogen non-producing or consuming bacteria in the system can result in gas production fluctuation.
