Currently, Light Emitting Diodes or LEDs are an increasingly important part of global lighting. However, recent research has made possible to develop an even more energy efficient solution than LEDs by optically coupling laser diodes to a remote phosphor. Laser diodes operate on a principle similar to LEDs but allow to obtain a higher luminous power. In fact for an equivalent luminous power, this allows to use less laser diodes and thus greatly reduce problems caused by using a network of light sources. Laser diodes are also less prone to thermal runaway than LEDs.
