Edge serration defect, also called saw toothed edge condition, are material excrescences that grow during cold rolling of steel coils and is initiated by the edge-trimming process. This research work focuses on these two stages of steel coils manufacturing, in order to understand the phenomena that lead to this defect. Two design of experiments are performed on trimmed edge specimens. The effects of parameters such as strain hardening and part/work-roll contact conditions are studied using the Upsetting Rolling Test (URT). These two design of experiments show that the considered parameters strongly affect the edges behaviour on cracking. Specimens analysis can only be performed a posteriori.
