Rice formed the most important part of the rations issued to the Japanese soldiers. During the campaign in Manchuria the army, consisting of over 400,000 men, used over 600,000 pounds of rice a day. The labor and expense of transporting this enormous quantity of rice, together with the immense quantities of other supplies used, was handled by the Japanese commissary in a most systematic and expeditious manner.
