Nietzsche Bayreuth 1876: L'adieu au Gesamtkunstwerk

International audienceAt the moment when the Wagnerian ideal becomes a reality, during the first performances of Der Ring des Nibelungen, at the very moment as he has just published the most orthodox Wagnerian manifesto, Friedrich Nietzsche flees into the Bohemian Forest. He decides not to see Wagner again and experiences the first symptoms of an illness that will lead him inexorably, a few years later, to madness, silence and death, as if the experience in Bayreuth had precipitated his physical disgust for the Wagnerian work of art. The conflicting relationship between the philosopher and the musician cannot be reduced, however, to the individual, affective, pathological dimension it takes on in the literature about Nietzsche. It raises a question of an aesthetic nature, which also goes beyond the question of a judgement of taste consisting in asking whether or not one should love Wagner and what his music consists of. Nietzsche restores hope to modern musical drama to regenerate a decadent culture and achieve the Greek miracle. Was this ideal to remain a utopia? Did the flight into the forest of 1876 mark the definitive and tragic farewell of philosophy to art, the farewell to the Gesamtkunstwerk? The break with Wagner comes as a disillusionment in the face of an ideal that becomes real, at the moment when the work of art becomes a spectacle.Au moment où l'idéal wagnérien devient une réalité, pendant les premières représentations de Der Ring des Nibelungen, alors même qu'il vient de publier le plus orthodoxe des manifestes wagnériens, Friedrich Nietzsche s'enfuit dans la forêt de Bohème. Il décide de ne plus revoir Wagner et il éprouve les premiers symptômes d'une maladie qui le conduira inexorablement, quelques années plus tard, à la folie, au silence et à la mort, comme si l'expérience de Bayreuth avait précipité son dégoût physique pour l'œuvre d'art wagnérienne. La relation conflictuelle du philosophe et du musicien ne saurait être réduite pourtant à la dimension individuelle, affective, pathologique qu'elle prend dans la biographie nietzschéenne. Elle pose une question d'ordre esthétique, qui dépasse aussi la question du jugement de goût consistant à se demander s'il faut aimer ou non Wagner et en quoi consiste sa musique. Nietzsche redonne l'espoir au drame musical moderne de régénérer une culture décadente et de réaliser le miracle grec. Cet idéal devait-il demeurer une utopie ? La fuite dans la forêt de 1876 marque-t-elle l'adieu définitif et tragique de la philosophie à l'art, l'adieu au Gesamtkunstwerk ? La rupture avec Wagner intervient comme une désillusion en face d'un idéal qui devient réel, au moment où l'œuvre d'art devient spectacle
