International audienceAt the moment when the Wagnerian ideal becomes a reality, during the first performances of Der Ring des Nibelungen, at the very moment as he has just published the most orthodox Wagnerian manifesto, Friedrich Nietzsche flees into the Bohemian Forest. He decides not to see Wagner again and experiences the first symptoms of an illness that will lead him inexorably, a few years later, to madness, silence and death, as if the experience in Bayreuth had precipitated his physical disgust for the Wagnerian work of art. The conflicting relationship between the philosopher and the musician cannot be reduced, however, to the individual, affective, pathological dimension it takes on in the literature about Nietzsche.
