Multiple connections between concepts visible in conceptual metaphor theory and blending theory lead to a natural engagement of metaphorical principles in mapping between different perceptual domains in science, design, and art. Cross-modal projects and intermedia works use similar concepts. These ideas seem to have been simultaneously discovered and employed by people wrestling with knowledge representation problems in many fields. The literature review provides a taxonomy of elements in conceptual metaphor theory and blending theory. These elements structured the case studies in this dissertation. The goal of the taxonomy was to provide the conceptual structure for a cross-modal, knowledge representation toolkit
