Permanent magnet Brushless DC (BLDC) motors have been used extensively in industrial, automotive and aerospace applications in the last decade. This paper presents a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) based control drive for BLDC motors using digital pulse width modulation (PWM) speed controller. Presented BLDC motor commutation technique is based on three inbuilt Hall Effect sensors. A novel algorith m is proposed to implement a closed loop PWM speed controller using FPGA for BLDC motors. Motor speed is controlled through a predefined value or manually by the user. The proposed method is modeled by Xilinx Integrated Software Environment (ISE) Simulator and MATLAB/Simulink.
