The aim of this review chapter is to move towards a clearer understanding of seasonality of mood. The core of the paper will address the definition of seasonality, which is arguably unclear (Bauer, 1992). Prior to this discussion however, it is necessary to briefly review four areas of background theory and research: the emergence of the seasonality construct from SAD research, the circadian system, the structure of mood states and the structure of personality. Readers with a tight schedule be warned: the ideas presented below are merely preliminary considerations of some novel questions, and the paper is therefore wide-ranging and discursive in style
