As the United Nations International Decade of Education for Sustainable Development approaches, it is timely to identify the achievements in education that have been accomplished in the decade of educational innovation between the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in 1992 and the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in 2002. It is timely also to assess the lessons that have been learnt during this decade and to identify the critical issues and challenges facing education reform
