Service-Oriented Architectures, and in particular, Web Services, are methods for distributing software systems across businesses, locations and platforms. Software monitoring is vital due to the dynamic nature, and business and legal requirements of these systems. However, monitoring also comes with a performance burden. This work first measured the performance impacts of existing web service monitoring techniques. Having established these impacts, a technique was devised to optimize web service monitoring systems in order to reduce performance impacts whilst delivering an acceptable level of monitoring. Applying this optimization technique has resulted in performance increases of over 30% in case study systems
