Sports and research into sports journalism feature in only a tiny minority of international articles and conference papers at the academic end of the profession. This article looks at sports place in the research literature and its importance among journalistic practitioners and their audiences, and theorises that sports research in academic journalism has become unpopular for two measurable reasons: (1) gender; and (2) market forces
