The paper presents a review of the present state of research in the field of wind generated ocean waves. The paper investigates the present state of knowledge of the observational database, numerical modeling and of satellite remote sensing. It is concluded that in deep water, present-day numerical models produce reliable results, but that additional research is required to accurately predict finite-depth conditions. Satellite remote sensing offers enormous potential. In order to realize this potential, additional research into extreme value distributions is required. In addition, a comprehensive, quality controlled and calibrated database of satellite observations is required
