In the coming years, air traffic systems will need to accommodate phenomenal growth in air traffic. Whilst current air traffic systems are being adjusted, new air traffic systems are being designed. Aircraft, the flightdeck, airports and not least of all, air traffic controllers need to keep pace with these changes. A serious issue concerns the determination of competencies and selection procedures that need to be identified and developed for new ATM systems. The current article discusses these issues, and the challenges for the future
