Research and development of new materials and technologies has traditionally been dominated by scientific and engineering disciplines. However, methods are emerging that integrate design into the process to accelerate time frames, reduce risk and improve market uptake. In an Australian context, the Collaborative Research Centre for Wood Innovations integrated design with engineering and science in the initial stages of new materials development for microwave modified timber.
