Voices silenced: musicological essay on samba in the early twentieth century from an Africanist perspective

This work discusses the process of the emergence of samba and its penetration in the newborn Brazilian phonographic market at the beginning of the 20th century, with a view to Africanist perspective. Looking to establish an interdisciplinary dialogue between studies sociocultural and musicology, we analyze this popular manifestation both in its sound and poetic characteristics, as well as historical, social and cultural. Here, the person and the black musicality sets the tone of our plot, from scattered cultural goods that are (re) arranged under an Africanist conception of the pieces that will compose this social board Brazilian. Through Afro-Brazilian cultural concepts and practices, which, although silenced, forced barriers and found space to counter the cruelties of the State (or rather, Brazilian ruling class) perpetrated on the black people. Samba, in these circumstances, will represent a set of aesthetic standards and social practices that are merge, strategically, with the daily life of Rio. Its music establishes dimensions that allow the black people to reorganize themselves socially, forcing us to move in this shifting territory in search of new interpretations and approaches to unravel it.Pesquisa sem auxílio de agências de fomentoTrabalho de Conclusão de Curso (Graduação)Este trabalho discorre sobre o processo de surgimento do samba e sua penetração no recém-nascido mercado fonográfico brasileiro no começo do século XX, tendo em vista uma perspectiva africanista. À procura de estabelecer um diálogo interdisciplinar entre os estudos socioculturais e a musicologia, analisamos essa manifestação popular tanto em suas características sonoras e poéticas, quanto históricas, sociais e culturais. Aqui, a pessoa e a musicalidade negras dão o tom de nosso enredo, a partir de bens culturais dispersos que são (re)arranjados sob uma concepção africanista das peças que irão compor esse tabuleiro social brasileiro. Através de conceitos e práticas culturais afro-brasileiras, que mesmo silenciadas, forçaram barreiras e encontraram espaço para fazerem contraponto às crueldades do Estado (ou melhor, classe dominante brasileira) perpetradas ao povo negro. O samba, nessas circunstâncias, irá representar um conjunto de padrões estéticos e práticas sociais que se fundem, de maneira estratégica, ao cotidiano carioca. Sua música institui dimensões simbólicas que permitem ao povo negro se reorganizar socialmente, nos obrigando a deslocarmos nesse território movediço à procura de novas interpretações e abordagens para desvendá-la
