OBJECTIVES: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is highly heterogeneous, with phenotypic variability and behavioural complexity greatest within higher-functioning individuals without intellectual disability (i.e., ‘high-functioning ASD’). Historically, differentiating between high-functioning ASD subgroups, Asperger’s disorder (AS) and autistic disorder without intellectual disability (i.e., high-functioning autism, HFA), has been extensively debated.
