Creole Leninism : Grenada a case study

This thesis examines the socialist transformation and subsequent militarization and violent political polarization of Grenada in view of the primary source documents that were recovered by the joint Caribbean task force in October 1983. Chapter one presents a brief history and the rise to power of Maurice Bishop and the New Jewel Movement. Chapter two demonstrates the strategic significance of the Caribbean basin to both the United States and the Soviet Union. Chapter three traces the Soviet, Cuban and other communist bloc assistance, to Grenada with an examination of Grenadian foreign policy during the Bishop regime. Chapter four reviews the assassination of Maurice Bishop with contrasting parallels of Soviet decisionmaking in Angola and Afghanistan.
