Testing terrestrial laser scanners` distances and determining coordinates on an established test field

Terrestrilise laserskaneerimise süsteemid on olnud saadaval rohkem kui kümme aastat ja see on saamas üldtuntud meetodiks 3D andmete hankimisel. Terrestriliste laserskannerite kasutamine muutub üha populaarsemaks ka Eestis. Kuid siiani puuduvad üldised täpsusnõuded terrestrilistele laserskanneritele, ei ole standardiseeritud teste ega kalibreerimismeetodeid kasutajatele. Teema on väga oluline, kuna Eestis ei ole testirada skannerite testimiseks ja antud temaatikat ei ole ka siin varem uuritud. Magistritöö peamine eesmärk on kontrollida ja võrrelda erinevaid Eestis saadaolevaid terrestrilisi laserskannerid ja anda skannerite kauguse ja koordinaatmääramisele täpsushinnang. Kuna täpseid kriteeriumeid ei ole antud, siis uurimuses tehtud katsed ja võrdlused on tehtud vastavalt sellele, mida autor on pidanud oluliseks. Magistritöö esimeses osas on välja toodud ülevaade terrestrilisest laserskaneerimisest. Samuti on antud lühike ülevaade laserskannerite testimisest erinevate teadusasutuste poolt. Teises osas kirjeldatakse testiraja väljatöötamist ja skaneerimist kolme erineva laserskanneriga (Leica ScanStation C10, Leica HDS6200 ja Leica HDS3000). Antud osas ära toodud ka skanneriga leitud kauguse ja koordinaatmääramise tulemused ja võrdlus referentspunktidega. Testirajal läbi viidud katsed näitasid, et skannerite kaugusemõõtmise täpsuse väärtused varieerusid ±1mm ja ±5mm vahel ja koordinaatide väärtused ±1mm kuni ±12mm vahel (antud väärtused on erinevused skaneeritud tähiste ja referentstähiste vahel, mis oli leitud elektrontahhümeetriga). Testide tulemused näitasid, et uurimuses osalenud laserskannerid vastavad üldjoontes tootjate spetsifikatsioonides toodud täpsusele, samas on need instrumenditi erinevad. Testid näitasid, et skannerid on mõjutatud erinevatest vigade allikatest, mida oleks võimalik vähendada instrumendi kalibreerimisel. Seetõttu on oluline, et skannerite standardid ja kalibreerimismeetodid töötatakse välja ja neid on võimalik tavakasutajal kasutada. Terrestrilise laserskaneerimise jätkuuuringutes tuleks arendada välja lihtne kalibreerimise protseduur. Võiks kasutada erinevaid tähiseid ja katsekehasid, uurida näiteks resolutsiooni täpsust, pindade peegeldumise mõju kauguse mõõtmisel, laserkiire langemisnurga intensiivsust. Samuti võiks uurida registreerimise-, modelleerimise-, väliste orienteerimisparameetrite jne õigsust ja täpsust. Oluline on, et edasised uuringud oleks läbi viidud ka välitingimustes.Terrestrial laser scanning systems have been available on the market for more than ten years and it is on the way to becoming accepted as a common method of 3D data acquisition. The use of terrestrial laser scanning is increasing in Estonia as well. So far there are no overall accuracy requirements for terrestrial laser scanners, nor standardized tests and methods of calibration for users. The topic is very important as there is no test field for testing scanners in Estonia and the given topic has not been studied here. The main aim of this paper is to test and compare different kinds of terrestrial laser scanners used in Estonia and give accuracy assessment determining distances and coordinates of the scanners. As there are no requirements for the calibration of scanners, tests and comparisons were taken according to the best view of author. The first part of the paper gives an overview of terrestrial laser scanning technologies. A short overview of testing and its results conducted by different research institutions is given as well. The second part of the paper describes working out the test field and scanning with three different laser scanners (Leica ScanStation C10, Leica HDS6200 and Leica HDS3000). The results of accuracy tests of distance and coordinate measurements are compared with reference points and the results are presented and summarized in this part. The investigations in the test field showed that the range value varied from ±1mm to ±5mm for the tested scanners, coordinate value varied from ±1mm to ±12mm (these results are derived from differences between scanned and reference targets which were measured with tachymeter). The accuracy tests of distance measurements and coordinates showed that the results of the scanners met the accuracy specification of the manufacturers but accuracy is slightly different for each instrument. Tests showed that the scanners are influenced by different kind of errors, which might be reduced by instrument calibration, therefore it is necessary to define standards and calibration methods for the scanners which can be applied by the users. Simple procedures for calibration should be developed in future additional studies of terrestrial laser scanners.Different kinds of targets and “test bodies” could be used to study for example accuracy of resolution, influence of surface reflectance on the range measurements and intensity on the laser beam incidence angle. Accuracy of registration, modelling, external orientation parameters etc. could be studied. It is important that further studies of terrestrial laser scanning field tests should be performed too
