The status of women, most notably black women, in social work higher education is the focus of the study. A longitudinal, cohort design is utilized to examine the pattern of change for women between the two years, 1979 and 1985. The status of women is examined in relation to their occupational attainment: administrative positions, academic ranks, tenure, and salary. The study further analyzes the extent to which membership in a racial or ethnic group enhances or deters occupational attainment in social work higher education. The findings suggest that ethnicity is more significant in 1979 than in 1985. Ethnicity does not appear to be significant in relation to administrative positions and tenure.
