The three different cytochromes which can be differentiated by their absorption bands were described by Keilin in 1925. The cytochromes are designated as a, b, or c. It was determined later that heart muscle preparations also contained a cytochrome which resembles cytochrome a in relation to its absorption bands but differs in its sensitivity to carbon monoxide. This particular cytochrome was designated as a3. Heart muscle is found to contain relatively large concentrations of cytochrome c. It is the only readily soluble cytochrome.
