Makean veden tuotanto aaltoenergian avulla - uuden tuotekoseptin energiatekninen analysointi ja laitteistokehitystyö

Wave power is a major energy source which is waiting for innovative solutions for its use. Wave power is researched and developed around the world, including Finland. Wave power is used for traditional energy production by producing electricity or it can be used to produce fresh water by pressurizing the seawater for reverse osmosis. Objective of this thesis was to do an energy technical analysis and hardware development of a new and interesting product concept. The new concept works in the field of producing fresh water from pressurized seawater. The energy technical analysis focuses on the energy consumption and efficiencies of the concept consisting of an adaptive pressure generator connected to a reverse osmosis unit. The hardware development focuses on the device itself to improve the structure and its adaptivity. Adaptivity refers to the pressure generator's ability to adapt to the changing wave power source and still produce the counter pressure required by the reverse osmosis unit. This thesis is a part of the Tekes-funded project called AaltoRO. The thesis consists of two parts, a literature survey and experimental research. The literature study examines the use of wave power, wave power itself, an overview of reverse osmosis, and other fresh water production methods. The experimental part of the thesis was carried out by participating in the test device development and performing measurements with the test device. Based on the results the use of the adaptive pressure generator to pressurize sea water for reverse osmosis is a concept having good developmental potential. The adaptive pressure generator can achieve an average of 80 % efficiency, but its control implementation requires further fine-tuning. The hardware development of this thesis presents ways to improve the efficiency and control of the pressure generator. The discussion of the results presents alternative solutions for controlling the salt water pressure of the reverse osmosis unit by throttling the reject flow, and for improving the energy efficiency of the whole concept.Aaltovoimassa on merkittävä energialähde odottamassa innovatiivisia ratkaisuita, joilla sitä päästään hyödyntämään. Aaltovoimaa tutkitaan ja sen käyttöönottoa kehitetään ympäri maailmaa, Suomessakin. Aaltovoimaa voidaan käyttää perinteiseen energiantuotantoon tuottamalla sähköä tai vaihtoehtoisesti voidaan tuottaa makeaa vettä paineistamalla merivettä käänteisosmoosia varten. Tämän diplomityön tavoite oli uuden ja kiinnostavan tuotekonseptin energiatekninen analysointi ja laitteistokehitystyö. Energiatekninen analysointi keskittyy paineenkehittimen energiankulutukseen ja hyötysuhteisiin. Laitteistokehitystyö keskittyy itse laitteen rakenteen parantamiseen sekä sen adaptiivisuuden ohjaukseen ja hallintaan. Adaptiivisuudella tarkoitetaan paineenkehittimen kykyä mukautua muuttuviin aaltotehoihin. Diplomityö on tehty osana Tekesin rahoittamaa AaltoRO-hanketta. Diplomityö koostuu kahdesta osasta, kirjallisuustutkimuksesta ja kokeellisesta tutkimuksesta. Kirjallisuustutkimuksessa tarkastellaan aaltovoiman käyttöä energiantuotannossa ja aaltovoimaloita. Tässä osassa luodaan katsaus myös käänteisosmoosiin ja muihin makean veden tuotantomenetelmiin. Diplomityön kokeellinen osa tehtiin osallistumalla koelaitteen kehitystyöhön, sekä tekemällä mittauksia koelaitteella. Mittaustulosten perusteella laskettiin paineenkehittimen hyötysuhde ja ominaisenergiankulutus. Tarkasteluun otettiin myös käänteisosmoosi ja siihen liittyvät ongelmat käytettäessä vaihtelevaa energialähdettä. Saatujen tuloksien perusteella adaptiivisen paineenkehittimen käyttäminen meriveden paineistamiseksi käänteisosmoosiin on mielenkiintoinen ja lisää tarkastelua vaativa konsepti. Adaptiivinen paineenkehitin saavuttaa keskimäärin 80 %:n hyötysuhteen, mutta sen ohjauksen toteutus vaatii edelleen kehittämistä. Laitteistokehityksen osalta tämä diplomityö esittää ehdotuksia koelaitteeseen hyötysuhteen ja ohjauksen parantamiseksi. Lisäksi työn tulosten pohdinnassa on esitetty vaihtoehtoisia ratkaisuita suolaveden paineen tuottamiseksi ja ylläpitämiseksi käänteisosmoosilaitteistossa, sekä konseptin energiatalouden parantamiseksi
