The city of Helsinki aims to increase the share of renewable energy that is produced or purchased by Helsinki Energy. It has been decided that Hanasaari and Salmisaari pulverized coal power plants will begin co-firing 5-10 % wood pellets with bituminous coal in 2015. A co-firing test was necessary and so in the autumn of 2012 pellet co-firing was tested at the Hanasaari power plant. This report covers the co-firing in a pulverized coal boiler, the results of the co-firing test in Hanasaari and an economic analysis of using pellet as a secondary fuel.
