Puupelletin seospoltto hiilipölyä polttavassa voimalaitoksessa

The city of Helsinki aims to increase the share of renewable energy that is produced or purchased by Helsinki Energy. It has been decided that Hanasaari and Salmisaari pulverized coal power plants will begin co-firing 5-10 % wood pellets with bituminous coal in 2015. A co-firing test was necessary and so in the autumn of 2012 pellet co-firing was tested at the Hanasaari power plant. This report covers the co-firing in a pulverized coal boiler, the results of the co-firing test in Hanasaari and an economic analysis of using pellet as a secondary fuel. It is obvious that co-firing of coal and pellet is more unprofitable than firing only coal. In October and November 2012, 525 tons of pellets were co-fired with a maximum of 7 % of the fuel power of the boiler and 15 % of the fuel power of one mill. It was noted that the pellets were not pulverized as well as the coal and that the pellets accumulated in the mills. An important observation was that even though the pellets increased the load on the mills, there was no major impact on the pulverization of the coal. In theory the sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions should decrease when co-firing biomass. It was noted that the nitrogen oxide emissions and the flue gas flow was increased, but these observations were expected because the carrier air was increased to ease the milling process. The sulphur oxide emissions were kept at the normal level due to the flue-gas desulfurization plant, but it was observed that the sulphur dioxide concentration in the flue gas before the desulfurization plant decreased and the use of lime in the desulfurization process decreased. The quality of the ash from the Hanasaari power plant fluctuates too much and it was impossible to identify any influences from the pellets. The alkali metals in the pellets could increase corrosion, fouling and slagging, but these problems were not noticed during these tests. These co-firing tests have shown that without significant problems the co-firing of 5-10 % pellets is possible. However, there is a need to optimize the pulverization by changing the mill parameters and analysing the ash more thoroughly. For these reasons it has been decided that the co-firing test will continue in the spring 2013.Helsingin kaupungin tavoitteena on lisätä uusiutuvien energialähteiden käyttöä Helsingin Energian tuotannossa ja hankinnassa, sekä vähentää oman tuotannon hiilidioksidipäästöjä. On päätetty, että vuonna 2015 alkaen sekä Hanasaaren että Salmisaaren hiilipölyä polttavissa voimalaitoksissa ruvetaan jatkuvasti polttamaan pellettiä 5-10 % osuudella kattiloiden polttoainetehoista. Syksyllä 2012 kokeiltiin polttaa pellettiä Hanasaaren voimalaitoksessa. Tässä työssä on selostettu seospoltto hiilipölykattilassa, Hanasaaren polttokokeesta saatuja tuloksia ja pelletin ja hiilen seospoltosta tehty taloudellinen tarkastelu, mikä osoitti selkeästi, että hiilen ja pelletin seospoltto on pelkkää hiilipolttoa kannattamattomampaa. Loka-marraskuussa järjestettävässä polttokokeessa poltettiin yhteensä 525 tonnia pellettiä. Pellettiä syötettiin enimmillään 7 % kattilan polttoainetehosta ja 15 % yhden hiilimyllyn polttoainetehosta. Havaittiin, että hiilimyllyihin menevä pelletti jauhaantuu huonommin kuin hiili, ja että pelletti kertyy hiilimyllyihin. Tärkeä havainto oli, että pelletti ei vaikuta hiileen jauhautuvuuteen, mutta kuormittaa myllyä hiilipolttoa enemmän. Teoriassa rikkidioksidi- ja typpioksidipäästöjen pitäisi laskea seospoltolla. Sen sijaan pelletissä olevat alkalimetallit voivat lisätä likaantumismekanismeja ja korroosiota. Tehtiin havaintoja lisääntyneestä typpioksidipäästöistä ja savukaasumäärästä, mutta nämä oli odotettavissa, sillä kantoilman määrää lisättiin myllyjen toiminnan helpottamiseksi. Rikkidioksidipäästöt pysyivät rikinpoistolaitoksen myötä samalla tasolla, mutta havaittiin, että savukaasujen rikkidioksidipitoisuus ennen rikinpoistolaitosta laski ja rikinpoistolaitoksessa käytettävän kalkkimaidon määrä väheni. Hanasaaren voimalaitoksen tuhkan laadun vaihtelu on suurta, eikä pelletistä huomattu merkittäviä muutoksia. Korroosion ja likaantumismekanismien lisääntymisestä ei tehty havaintoja. Näiden kokeiden myötä on selkeää, että 5-10 % pellettipoltto onnistuu hiilipölykattiloissa ilman suurempia ongelmia. Halutaan kuitenkin optimoida polttoaineiden jauhautuvuutta muuttamalla myllyjen parametreja ja analysoida tuhkia enemmän ja tämän vuoksi on päätetty, että polttokokeet jatkuvat keväällä 2013
