Arkkitehtuuria aistimassa - tutkielma aistien roolista arkkitehtuurin kokemisessa

The master's thesis discusses architecture as sensory-based experience. It introduces some ideas of the relationship between human senses and architectural perception based on literature published in the last few decades. In addition to theoretical knowledge, I also present some short-stories about my personal architectural experiences. Although the focus is on architecture and the senses, the study also presents experience and perception on a broader level. Through the senses a person perceives the world and acts in it. Phenomenology, a philosophical movement founded in the early 20th century, emphasizes the subjective role of the human being in perception. Simultaneously with phenomenology developed pragmatism stresses the role of the perceiver as well, and especially the significance of one's previous experiences in the process of creating new ones. Perception can also been approached from psychological perspective the studies of which show that some ways of seen the world are common to all humans others, in contrast, being formed by culture. The brain, although the core of the bodily functions, cooperates closely with the entire body to form mental pictures and memories. Architecture is often said to have to do with both science and art. The former is easy to understand when thinking about all the laws of physics, material technology, and such point of views. The latter, though, is not clearly defined. Is art the works of the artist? Is the value of art defined by the close circle of the owners of art? It has to be something more, something inside all of us because each and every one of us can enjoy a work of art without knowing anything about it. To have an aesthetic experience to put it. The thesis takes the five traditional senses -sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste -as the starting point of studying how architecture influences us. Usually, architecture is mostly evaluated by the eye. However, the whole process of perception is complete in nature in that all the senses together form the experience that we have. The smell of place, for example, affects the atmosphere even more that what we see thus strongly shaping the experience. As environment common to all people, one can easily enjoy architecture and art without having to give a thought to the interpretations of one's own feelings. Yet, when it comes to evaluation of architecture and design to be taken forth, the significance of the senses cannot be ignored.Tämä diplomityö käsittelee arkkitehtuurin kokemista aisteihin pohjautuvana tapahtumana. Se esittelee ihmisen aistien suhdetta arkkitehtuurin havaitsemiseen viime vuosikymmeninä julkaistujen, pääsääntöisesti arkkitehtien kirjoittamien julkaisujen pohjalta. Teoreettisen tiedon lisäksi mukana on myös omakohtaisia kokemuksiani ja havaintojani arkkitehtuurista tarinamuodossa. Työn painopiste on arkkitehtuurin ja aistien käsittelyssä, mutta se esittelee kokemista ja havaitsemista myös laajemmin. Aistien avulla ihminen havaitsee maailman ja niiden mukaan hän toimii siinä. Fenomenologia, 1900-luvun alussa muotoutunut filosofinen näkemys korostaa ihmisen roolia ilmiöiden havaitsemisessa. Myös samoihin aikoihin kehittynyt pragmatismin filosofia painottaa ihmisen subjektiivisuutta ja erityisesti aiemmin koetun merkitystä uusien havaintojen muotoutumisessa. Havaitsemista voidaan tutkia myös psykologisena ilmiönä. Tutkimuksissa on löytynyt niin kaikille ihmisille ominaisia tapoja hahmottaa maailmaa että kulttuurienvälisiä eroavaisuuksia, opittuja toimintatapoja. Neurotieteiden näkökulmasta kehon säätely ja ajattelu eivät rajaudu ainoastaan aivojen alueelle, vaan ihmisen keho on mielen kuvien ja muistojen kokonaisjärjestelmä. Arkkitehtuurista puhutaan usein sekä tieteeseen että taiteeseen liittyvänä alana. Tieteen osuus asiaan on helppo ymmärtää; liittyväthän rakentamiseen kiinteästi fysiikan lait, materiaalitekniset ominaisuudet ja muut vastaavat näkökulmat. Taide sen sijaan on lähtökohdiltaan tulkinnanvarainen puheenaihe. Onko taide taiteen tekijän aikaansaannos? Määräävätkö taidepiirit taiteen arvon? Yhteisenä ympäristönä arkkitehtuuri vaikuttaa myös muiden kuin taiteesta itsestään kiinnostuneiden elämään. Esteettinen kokemus on jotain luonnostaan ihmiselle kuuluvaa. Aistikokemisen osalta diplomityö käy läpi arkkitehtuurin tavat vaikuttaa ihmisen viiteen perinteisen luokittelun aistiin: näkö, kuulo, tunto, hajuja maku. Arkkitehtuuria arvioidaan yleensä pääsääntöisesti näköaistin avulla. Havaintotapahtuma on kuitenkin luonteeltaan kaikki aistit huomioon ottava. Esimerkiksi tuoksut vaikuttavat jopa nähtävää voimakkaammin tunnelman syntyyn ja siten vahvasti kokemuksen laatuun. Arkkitehtuurista nauttiminen ei vaadi kokijan omien tuntemusten tulkintaa, nautinto voi synty luonnollisesti itsestään. Kuitenkin sen arvioimisen ja uuden suunnittelun kannalta ihmisen aistien merkityksen tiedostaminen on tärkeää, jollei jopa välttämätöntä
