Ever since the explosion in the growth of the Internet in the 1990's, the exhaustion of the IPv4 address space has been only a matter of time. That time is now upon us. And yet, despite all the specification efforts, the new version of the IP protocol, IPv6, has not gained much traction in practical deployments. Instead, the Internet infrastructure has taken the short-sighted approach by adopting network address translation in ever growing scale, and as this work will show, to harmful effect. Even if this trend is not set to change any time soon, this thesis will show that not only is the adoption of IPv6 inevitable, but any IPv6 development by vendors already having a viable business case.
