Microscopic organisms, algae, have gained an increasing interest during the last decades as a raw material for biofuels due their high growth rate, lipid concentration and low growth area requirement. Algae cultivated in open or closed systems are also remarkably versatile as algal biomass can be converted to, among others, biodiesel, bioethanol, bio-methanol and bio hydrogen. Currently major challenges in algal biofuel production are high energy and investment costs of proposed production concepts.
