Of the existing battery technologies, the lithium ion battery is unrivalled in terms of energy density and it has emerged as the primary energy provider for mobile electronic devices. However, the currently used Li-ion battery materials are unsuitable for large scale applications due to their price and safety issues and thus new materials are needed.
