Kalevalankangas - elämyksellinen metsäloma puhtaassa luonnossa

As my master's thesis I have designed a memorable recreational destination to Kalevalankangas in Kuhmo. The master's thesis is based on an architecture student's competition that started in June 2011. In the competition a local tourism company Kalevala Spirit asked for new and fresh ideas for a tourist resort that would replace their old resort of which part of the old buildings have already been sold to future owners. The four-stage student competition was organized by Kalevala Spirit, Woodpolis and Aalto University Wood Studio. The aim of the competition was to present a new approach for a thematic recreational area with its services. The task was to design accommodation for circa 200 people. The accommodation had to be divided equally into given themes; earth, fire, water and air. Designing one hotel building or separated cabins was not accepted. The area plan also had to include a restaurant space for breakfast, seminar spaces, a bowling alley, storage space and a solution for parking and traffic. The old cabin village in the area with its services will be removed and only the mail building Pohjolan talo will remain in Kalevalankangas. The site, Kalevalankangas, is a boreal pine forest full of light with a plentiful brush, varying topography and tall trees characteristic to it. Kalevalankangas steeply rises from the lake Lammasjärvi which is strongly present on the site. In my area plan construction is centralized to carefully chosen places that fit each theme. At the same time a large part of the nature will stay untouched and the previously built and destroyed areas will be restored. The services of the new recreational area will be centralized to the entrance of the area and to the pool area. These services can be used whether you are staying at the resort or not. The accommodation buildings are tied to their places by the theme they interpret. Earth concentrates to what is happening on the ground of the forest; the brush, pine trunks and the view to the boreal forest. In theme earth the visitor is like in a nest on the ground. Fire seeks its inspiration from a lean-to. The accommodation spaces are divided in two and in the middle there is a semi-warm terrace with a fireplace. From there the light created by the fire reflects to the indoor spaces. Water is naturally situated to the shore of Lammasjarvi. There each accommodation unit is punctured by a dock that goes through the whole indoor space reaching out to the lake. There is an open view to the lake through large windows from every unit. Air is placed on the slopes of the highest hill on the site. There the visitor is above the area and has long views to the scenery through the pine canopies. In this accommodation unit the visitor is in a way on a branch and the pine canopies become a part of the indoor space. The accommodation buildings have a kertoQ construction and they can be divided into space elements with further planning. The space elements would be constructed from local materials at Wood polis factory couple of kilometres away from the site. With this arrangement the construction site will cause less stress for the nature on the site. Local materials and timber cut from the site is utilized in the construction of the accommodation units as much as possible.Diplomityöni on suunnitelma elämysmatkailukohteesta Kuhmon Kalevalankankaalle. Diplomityö perustuu kesäkuussa 2011 alkaneeseen opiskelijakilpailuun, jossa Kalevala Spirit-niminen matkailuyritys haki ehdotuksia uudenlaisesta loma-alueesta vanhan mökki- ja leirintäalueensa tilalle, jonka rakennuksista osa on jo myyty eteenpäin. Nelivaiheisen kilpailun järjestivät Kuhmon Kalevala Spirit, Woodpolis ja Aalto-yliopiston Puustudio. Suunnittelukilpailun tehtävänä oli suunnitella uudenlainen neljään eri teemaan jakautuva matkailualue oheispalveluineen. Annettuihin teemoihin maa, tuli, vesi ja ilma tuli suunnitella yhteensä noin 200 vuodepaikka sisältävät majoitusratkaisut ja paikkojen tuli jakautua tasaisesti. Yksittäisistä mökeistä tai yhdestä hotellirakennuksesta koostuvan suunnitelman laatiminen oli rajattu pois ratkaisuvaihtoehdoista. Aluesuunnitelmaan tuli lisäksi liittää aamiaisravintola, kokoustiloja, keilahalli, uima-allas alue, varastotilaa sekä pysäköinti- ja liikenneratkaisu. Vanha mökkikylä oheispalveluineen on tarkoitus poistaa. Ainoastaan päärakennus, Pohjolan talo, jää alueelle. Suunnittelualue on valoisa mäntykangas, jolle on tunnusomaista maanpinnan runsas kunttakerros, vaihtelevat pinnanmuodot ja runsas sekä korkea puusto. Kalevalankangas laskee jyrkästi Lammasjärveen, joka on vahvasti läsnä alueella. Aluesuunnitelmassani rakentaminen keskitetään teemoille sopiviin ja valittuihin paikkoihin. Samalla alueen luontoa säästetään mahdollisimman paljon ja vanhasta rakentamisesta vaurioituneet alueet kunnostetaan luonnontilaa vastaaviksi. Palvelut on keskitetty alueen sisäänkäynnin yhteyteen sekä uima-allasalueelle ja niitä voi käyttää vaikka ei loma-alueelle majoittuisikaan. Rakennusten teemat sitovat ne paikkaansa. Maateema keskittyy metsän alimpien kerrosten, kuntan ja puunrunkojen, sekä metsämaiseman katselemiseen. Majoitusyksiköissä ollaan ikään kuin pesässä. Tuli hakee inspiraationsa laavusta. Majoitustilojen keskellä on tuli, joka heijastuu tunnelmaa luoden sisätiloihin. Vesiteema on viety luonnollisesti järven rantaan, missä huonetilan läpi yhtenäisenä jatkuva laituri kurkottaa maalta järvelle. Sisätiloista on suora näkymä järvelle suurten lasipintojen läpi. lima on viety alueen korkeimman harjanteen rinteeseen missä päästään muun rakentamisen yläpuolelle ja mistä avautuvat pitkät näkymät puiden latvustojen läpi. Majoitusrakennuksissa ollaan ikään kuin oksalla ja mäntyjen valoisat latvustot ovat läsnä huonetilassa. Majoitusrakennukset ovat kertoQ- rakenteisia ja ne on jatkosuunnittelulla mahdollista jakaa tilaelementteihin. Tilaelementtien rakentaminen tapahtuisi Woodpoliksen tehtaalla muutaman kilometrin päässä suunnittelualueelta, joten alueen luonto altistuisi huomattavasti vähemmän työmaan aiheuttamasta rasituksesta.
