Background: The integration of internationally qualified midwives appears to be one of the strategies implemented to resolve the shortage of midwives in some German federal states. To date, there have been very few studies on the opportunities and limitations of the integration process for midwives. Objectives: Findings from a project on the integration of internationally qualified nurses were transferred to the work of midwives on an experimental basis, thus highlighting the phenomena which need to be investigated more closely in practice.
