Finnish Defence Forces investigates the environmental impacts of its own shooting and training area activities in a large-scale research project. The most significant sectors in the study are the shooting activities and the impacts on soil and groundwater. Most commonly used military explosives in Finland are viewed in this thesis. Materials are highly energetic and nitrogen rich like trinitrotoluene (TNT), hexogen (RDX) and octogen (HMX). The most important goal is to assess the chemical characteristics of explosives, analyse transportation and assess the risk for soil and groundwater contamination caused by traces of explosives.
