Eutrophication of the Baltic Sea needs can be prevented by decreasing the wastewater loading. This can be done by enhancing the nutrient removal with biological and chemical processes combined with advanced treatment as sand filtration or biofiltration. The aim of this thesis is to determine the situation in the wastewater treatment plants, and evaluate the possibilities of nitrogen and phosphorus removal in the Baltic Sea drainage basin. This thesis pertains to 9 countries: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Sweden.
