Propionic acid and propionates are widely used as food and animal feed preservatives. Because of the growth of population their applications and demand has increased. Conventional propionic acid production process is done via petrochemical route from ethane and naphtha. Lately there have been attempts to produce propionic acid with biotechnological means. Drawbacks of this sustainable bioprocess have been low yields and the lack of effective down stream process. Master's thesis focus was to study different down stream processing options for biotechnologically produced propionic acid. The goal was to find an effective and environmentally friendly process to separate propionic acid from a dilute fermentation broth. Reactive extraction...
