The subject of this thesis is a discrete-event simulation study of a new assembly plant that produces heavy machinery. The objectives are to confirm static calculations of the correct number of assembly cells and to study the effects crane resources have on inter-departure time and lead time. Labour requirements are also discussed, although they are not a primary point of interest. The theoretical part of this thesis offers an introduction to basic tools and methods of discrete-event simulation. A more practical approach to the aforementioned follows in the form of an introduction to basic elements and properties of Simul8 simulation software.
