Somalimaan energiasektori

The objective of this theme is to study the Energy sector in Somaliland. Charcoal has long been a problem in Somaliland and now it is time to be renounced it. Through this work the reader can get the hang of the situation in the energy sector and Somaliland in general. Somaliland social structure is totally different than the western countries, so it is mentioned in the first pages of this theme. In Somaliland charcoal is used almost in every household and consumption is growing. Despite the increase of the consumption, the charcoal supply is reduced and there is progressively imported charcoal in the Somaliland market. Geographically Somaliland is dry and charcoal production has stimulated desertification. Ten percent of the produced charcoal changes into fines and there are a lot of carbon dust heaps in the suburbs of Hargeysa. Making food people use charcoal braziers (Girgire), which are made from clay or metal. In the Pyrolysis process usually a lot of energy will be lost, but the situation is more serious in Somaliland. Cooking in charcoal brazier instead of in firewood stove the energy lost will be at least 50 %. Electricity is produced by old diesel generators and there are 40 % energy losses in electricity transmission. The price of electricity is very expensive in Somaliland and it is around 1 $/kWh. In the first instance Somali Landers must invest in energy efficiency to reduce charcoal production. Energy efficiency can be improved very easily and quickly, but it requires habits to change. Charcoal must be produced in isolated kilns, which are covered by metal sheets and soil. Carbon dust can be turned into lumps of charcoal by using briquetting machines. Briquetting pilot projects is about to start in the next year, in order to utilize carbon dust. Solar electricity is highly competitive in the Somaliland electricity market, because of the climate and high electricity price. Self-sufficient solar PV system is very profitable for the householders and it will be wise investment in the long-term.Työn tarkoituksena on ollut tutkia Somalimaan energiasektoria. Puuhiili on ollut pitkään ongelmana Somalimaassa ja siitä halutaan luopua. Tämän työn kautta lukija pääsee tutustumaan Somalimaan energiasektorin tilanteeseen ja ylipäätään Somalimaahan. Somalimaan sosiaalinen rakenne on aivan erilainen kuin länsimaissa, joten työn ensimmäisillä sivuilla perehdytään näihin asioihin. Somalimaassa käytetään puuhiiltä melkein jokaisessa kotitaloudessa ja sen kulutus kasvaa. Kulutuksen kasvusta huolimatta puuhiilen tarjonta supistuu ja yhä enemmän markkinoilla näkee tuontihiiltä. Somalimaan maanperä on kuiva ja puuhiilen tuotanto on aiheuttanut aavikoitumista. Tuotetusta puuhiilistä 10 % jauhoksi ja hiilijauhekasoja näkee Somalimaan pääkaupungin Hargeysan lähiöissä. Ruuanlaitossa ihmiset käyttävät puuhiililiesiä (Girgire). Puiden pyrolyysiprosessissa yleensä menetetään paljon energiaa, mutta tilanne on Somalimaassa vakavampi. Ruuan laittamisessa polttamalla puuhiiltä polttopuiden sijaan menetetty energia on vähintään 50 %. Sähkö tuotetaan vanhoilla dieselgeneraattoreilla ja sähkönsiirrossa tapahtuu jopa 44 prosentin häviöitä. Sähkön hinta on somalimaassa kallis (1 $/kWh). Puuhiilen vähentämisen kannalta on ensisijaisesti panostettava pyrolyysiin ja energiatehokkuuteen. Somalimaassa energiatehokuutta voidaan parantaa hyvin helposti ja nopeasti, mutta se vaatii toimintatapojen muuttamista. Pyrolyysiprosessissa voidaan tuottaa hiiltä eristetyillä miiluilla. Puuhiilen jauhoiksi menevää osuutta voidaan briketöidä ja sitä kautta käyttää hyväksi. Sähkön kannalta aurinkoenergia on erittäin kilpailukykyinen energiantuotantomuoto Somalimaan ilmaston ja korkean sähkönhinnan takia. Kotitalouksille omavarainen aurinkosähköjärjestelmä on erittäin kannattava ja pitkällä tähtäimellä se olisi viisas sijoitus
